Artikulation: Graphic Scores of the Avant-Garde

  • Saturn 200 41st Street South Birmingham, AL, 35222 United States (map)

This evening features music performed via graphic scores — an approach to creating music that eschews traditional notation in favor of original abstractions. Though some elements of each piece will be predetermined (tempo, key, etc.), the musicians’ interpretation of the score drives each performance. To celebrate these unusual compositions, the scores will be projected during each performance so the audience may attempt to follow along… Or, fail that, appreciate the striking visual counterpart. The evening will focus heavily on selections from "Treatise" by British composer Cornelius Cardew -- performed by a large ensemble of Birmingham musicians, including members of Wray, In Snow, Iron Giant Percussion, Teen Getaway, Null, Them Natives and legendary outré guitarist, Davey Williams. The program also includes music by György Ligeti (Artikulation), John Cage, Brian Eno, and an original score by Null's Brad Davis.
